Curriculum Overview

INTENT

At St Francis, we believe in developing and nurturing the whole child. We have developed our curriculum so that it is rooted in character education through Christ-centred virtues.  We want our children to aspire to be the best that they can be and develop resilience to prepare them for the world in the 21st century.  Our curriculum is taught with the consideration of the needs of all our learners, no matter their background, ability or need. We are passionate about building every child's bank of cultural capital so that equality in experience and opportunity is achieved. Our curriculum is exciting, engaging, meaningful, beautiful and inspires children to nurture a passion for learning.

We are committed to meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.  Our long term plans and KSV (knowledge, skills, vocabulary) grids ensure a broad and balanced curriculum and reflect the content and challenge of not only the statutory National Curriculum, but also the curriculum we feel is most appropriate and necessary for the children in our care.

We have designed our curriculum under four strands:

1. Character Education

2. Knowledge

3. Skills

4. Enrichment/Cultural Capital

We believe these four strands provide our children with what they need for their education and beyond.

IMPLEMENTATION

Hover over the tabs on the right to find out how we implement our curriculum in each subject. Then visit our classes to find the long term plans for each year group.

IMPACT

The impact of the St Francis curriculum is monitored through rigorous triangulation throughout the year to gauge the impact of the curriculum offer. This includes all stakeholders and activities such as pupil voice, assessment outcomes, planning, monitoring of books and displays, lesson learning walks and discussions with teaching staff, pupils and parents. This looks at all subjects, all experiences, all opportunities, in all year groups and for all pupils.

The desired outcomes of the curriculum ensure that pupils are well rounded students, ready to embark on high school education. In line with our mission, we believe our children possess unique gifts and talents. As such, their time at St Francis enables them to succeed, recognise these abilities, be resilient to challenge and develop as a whole person in a loving and nurturing school community while growing closer and closer to God. Our school mission is firmly rooted in our values with a sense of togetherness being the foundation of everything we do.

Stakeholders are proud of our curriculum but recognise that it is never ‘done’ as we continuously work to further improve it, adjust it according to our pupils’ changing needs and bring about the best ‘St Francis Curriculum’ we can.
